I'm not sure where the word sandpaper originates from but certainly nowadays it isn't sand and it often isn't paper, either. Modern day sandpaper usually consists of cloth or paper backing material covered with abrasive particles like silicon carbide.or aluminum oxide.
Sandpaper has many of uses around the home or workshop but we are looking at its role in preparation for finishing or painting today.
Usually when you are preparing any surface for painting the process is to start with a rougher paper and move progressively to finer grits, until you reach the desired level of smoothness. It's important to remove all marks as paint is not that great at covering blemishes though you should be careful wit your choice of paint especially for skirting and door frames.
