Stanley Fatmax Claw Hammer Review

This Stanley FatMax hammer is the most expensive on our top 5 list of claw hammers, where it ranked at number 4 on our list. The reason for the more expensive price is about the design of the FatMax.

A lot more engineering work has gone into the making of this one, and hence the much higher price point.

This one has an RRP of £37, but there are many places on line, where you can pick this hammer up for around £17 or even less. When it comes to the engineering side of producing this, the face of the hammer has been milled for extra strength.

It also has a slight curve in the crawl to make removing nails easier.

Finally  it has an anti-vibration design, to help save your arm from the impact of the actual hammer striking.

I know that hammers are not sexy. However if you looked at all of the claw hammers available, this is the best looking of them all. The design is excellent, and this hammer does deliver a might blow.

This one is a 20 ounce framing hammer, so great for both light to heavy types of jobs. You might be able to break this one, but that would not be easy. It is well balanced and the grip is excellent. The anti-vibration design works really well.

If you pulled this one out on a building site, then there would be a few people having a good luck. The chances are it would also be liable to take an uninvited walk.

How Buyers Rate the Stanley FatMax Claw Hammer

At the time of writing this review, there were over 50 online buyer reviews, and we have read and summarised all of those. It is not a lot of reviews, but that is mainly because the huge majority of buyers don't want to fork out near £20 on a hammer.

On average those buyers have rated this hammer a 90% buyer satisfaction rating, which is a very good rating, by any measure.

Almost 8 out of 10 buyers, gave this FatMax hammer the full 5 star treatment. Around 7% of all buyers who thought this hammer merited a 1 star review.

In this section we have included what I think are the important things to know. With a hammer that is not too difficult, however, still important to know certain things.

  • Measures 31.7 x 3.3 x 15 cm
  • Weighs 20 ounces
  • One piece solid forged construction
  • Anti-vibe tuning fork to dampen vibrations
  • Soft grip handle

What Buyers Say About the Stanley 20 Oz FatMax

Overall buyers clearly like this useful little hammer. Below we have summarised what people had to say, and we have included a few buyer quotes, to give the summary list some emphasis.

  • A very well made and useful hammer
  • Has a nice weight and balance to it, and easy to swing with a lot of power
  • Top quality workmanship, and a well engineered tool
  • Solid grip and comfortable to use
  • A couple of buyers were sent the wrong hammer

It is worth pointing out that buyers who gave this a bad review, were actually sent the wrong hammer. They returned that and got the right one.

However those buyers left a one star review, and that is understandable. They were disappointed, as we would be, but that does not actually reflect the high quality of this hammer. Also different hammers are used for various jobs and you really need to learn the best hammering techniques and what strength each hammer is.

Our Verdict on the Stanley STA151277 570g FatMax Anti-Vibe All Steel Curved Claw Hammer

96%
OUR RATING

There is no doubt that this is an expensive hammer, when compared to normal market prices for claw hammers. It is however the best one on the market right now.

The ratings would be even higher, if it were not for the fact, that around 3-4 buyers were sent the wrong product. Don't let that influence your decision though. If you want to own a high quality hammer, then this is for sure, your best choice.

It is made from one piece of forged steel, and that makes it super tough. Most other claw hammers are put together by attaching the head to a shaft, and that introduces weakness. This one is as solid as a rock, and also made with high quality steel.

If there is a better claw hammer on the UK market right now, I have yet to find it. Though there are many different types of hammer and if you need something a bit smaller then the Rolson Stubby Hammer is an excellent choice.
