Best Paint Plaster Mixing Paddles UK

In this article we review, the top 5 rated paint plaster mixing paddles. These are one of the most under used products in the UK market.

We think not that many people know about them, even though they are extensively used by painters and plasterers up and down the UK.

If you have never used one before, then you can see what one looks like in the image above. Now the reality is that not every home needs one of these. However if you are doing any type of renovating, or you are a professional, then splash out £5-10 and buy one of these time saving devices.

These can be used to mix paint, plaster, cement slurries and textured coatings. You simply attach these to your drill using the chuck. As such they take the effort out of mixing and also do a much better job of mixing.

Now like any product, different types of mixing paddles are used for mixing different mixtures. The one that you use for paint will be different to the one, that you use to mix much heavier cement.

Video on How to Pick the Right Mixing Paddle

Just below, you will find an excellent video on how to pick the right paddle, depending on what you are going to mix. It is certainly well worth a watch, before buying anything.

Professional Mixing Paddle

Some people don't want to attach a paddle to their drill. They would rather just get a portable style of hand held mixer. These cost around £60-100 on average and they stop you having to worry about burning out your drill.

As they are specifically designed for the job, they also tend to work a lot better. The Evolution Power Tools Twister Variable Speed Mixer is a good example of that.

This is a heavy duty paddle, with 6 speeds and suitable for mid viscosity liquids, including plaster, cement, mortar, glue, adhesive and paint.

Paint and Plaster Mixing Paddle Buying Guide

People buy these for a whole variety of purposes. They can be used for:

  • Mixing plaster
  • Mixing fillers, mortar or cement
  • Mixing screed or concrete
  • Mixing paint
  • Mixing epoxy and polyurethanes
  • Mixing skim coats
  • Mixing tile adhesive

What Type of Drill Should You Use With a Mixing Paddle?

This will depend entirely on what you are trying to mix. A cordless drill is ideal for the lighter paddles, and for mixing epoxy, polyurethanes and paint. When it comes to mixing the heavier solutions like plaster, or cement based products, you will need a more powerful drill.

The recommendation is that a heavier drill should have at least a 650 RPM capability. Any drill smaller than this would not be wise to use, as it would very quickly burn out the motor. The drill will also need to have variable speed.

Which Mixing Paddle Should You Buy?

Most of the paddles on our top 10 list can be used to mix paint, plaster, cement slurries and textured coatings. They almost all have hex shanks, and that means a better grip in your chuck.

If you only need one for mixing paint, or glues then a smaller paddle will do the job nicely. You can use this type of paddle with an ordinary drill, and many of the smaller cordless drills.

If however, you plan on using this to mix plaster, or mortar then you will need the larger suitable paddle, as shown in the top 5 table above. To be able to drive these paddles around in heavy mixtures, you will need a pretty powerful drill.

I would recommend a corded drill, but some of the 18 or 20 volt cordless will also do the job.
