Best Rotary Burr Set Reviews

Thanks for taking your time to read our reviews on the best rotary burr set that is currently available on the United Kingdom marketplace.

Burr tools are really a rotating type of file that are used for fine shaping work. They will remove material quickly and accurately and tend to be used by craftsmen for fine work.

They are a universally fitting type of tool and although there are specialised holder tools, such as the Dremel, most people just use them in a standard drill. I dont feel that you need a specific tool to use them, a drill has always worked very well for me.

If you use a variable speed drill with a slow start feature then you cant really go wrong, after a bit of practice on some spare material obviously.

Just below you will see our top 5 list of rotary burr sets. However, we also know you are busy, so if you don't have time to read our full review, we would highly recommend the Rotary Burr Set Carving Tool

Rotary Burr Set Buying Tips

So a few things you need to know about these sets. Firstly there are different types of burr for different materials and actions.

Single cut burrs have a right handed spiral flute. These tend to be used with stainless steel and for metal in general. They will remove material quickly and they will leave a pretty smooth finish.

Double cut carbide burrs tend to be used on plastics and wood although they do still work on metal. Because they have more cutting edges they will leave a smoother finish and usually work much quicker. These are the most popular types of burrs.

The shanks are usually found in the following shank sizes:

  • 1.6mm or 1/16"
  • 2.35mm or 3/32"
  • 3mm or 1/8"
  • 6mm or 1/4"

The smaller the shank is then the faster the RPM needs to be for the burr to work well. For instance a 16mm shank needs to rotate around 25000 RPM and a 6mm will work best around 15000RPM, so keep this in mind when you are buying your set.

Lastly, when you are using these tools there are a few basics. Dont use too much pressure and try to keep the burr on the move as much as possible. You will get some tips in the video below.

  1. I am looking for advice on what cutting tools I can use to quickly and safely carve a bowl shaped hole in wood to make small wood planters. I am new to this but currently have a dewalt 1.8v battery drill and a guild 750w 115mm angle grinder. I wanted to know what rotary type spheres are best to gouge out. Are any compatible with the tools I have or do I need another separate tool. Thanks

    1. Hi, what type of finish do you need. Are you looking for something really smooth or will it not matter because you have sooil covering it?

      1. Thanks for replying. Yes- The base and majority of the sides of the hole/groove can be rough as the soil will be covering but nearer the top edge would need to look smoother.
