Makita DTW1001Z Review

Thanks for taking your time to read our review of the Makita DTW1001Z 18 V LXT Brushless 3/4In Impact Wrench. Below we have included a full and detailed review of this highly popular choice for UK buyers.

This is the biggest of the cordless impact drivers and it's a beast of a machine. It is a 3/4 drive that puts out a massive 1700Nm, which is easily the most powerful machine we have reviewed. This is not for the faint hearted and will only really be needed by the most serious of professionals.

There is a more powerful 1800Nm Makita model available but it's 1/2" drive and for this sort of power the bigger drive is definitely preferable, especially as it's not much heavier in weight.

This is a great impact wrench with a 3/4" square driving shank and really high tightening torque. We call it a little beast of a tool. It has a a brushless motor for efficiency and will greatly increase the life time of the tool.

It is compact and has an electric brake, a variable speed control trigger, reverse switch and twin LED job light. It has  Hard/Med/Soft Impacts per min: 0-2200/2000/1800 impacts per minute.

Pros

  • Buyers stated that this wrench was lighter than they expected and very well balanced
  • Most buyers agreed that it was easily powerful enough to do wheel nuts

  • 1 or mentioned that he had recieved a faulty product

Power, power and more power. All the buyers thought this was a very powerful impact wrench that had not problem doing any job, particularly awkward wheel nuts. As an alternative to an air power tool it is excellent in every way and much more portable.

Makita DTW1001Z - 3 Key Features

Power

It can deliver up to 1,800 rpm and 2,200 ipm. It truly has nut busting torque, and this wrench can loosen a bolt tightened to a torque of 1,700 Nm. This is a massive amount of power and should really be enough for any job. There is a 1/2" drive model that is slighty more powerful but it is more expensive and i cant see why you wouldnt prefer the 3/4" model.

This is truly enough power for anyone and one customer gave me a laugh in his review by saying ". I also received a letter from Thor himself asking if I would swap it for his hammer"

Electronic 3 Stage Impact Power Selection

These are classed as hard, medium and soft and what we like is the complete control this gives you with the choice of driving power. This lets you control exactly what amount of power you send to the variable speed trigger.

I expect most will use it on the middle setting and move it up or down as required. I usually only used the lowest setting when I had the adaptor down to 1/2" in use and the highest setting is for serious or problem nuts.

Brushless Motor

The brushless motor gets rid of carbon brushes, and allows the motor to run cooler and more efficiently for a longer life. It is also electronically controlled to optimise battery energy and use up to 50% longer run time per charge.

Most people will tell you that brushless is much better than using carbon brushes. The tool functions much smoother and feels better, as well as the battery and tool overall life being improved.

A very quick video review

We have looked over all the video reviews and found this great short presentation on this Makita power tool. It gives you an instant idea of what to expect as well as telling you all the features and spec in and easy to understand format.

I hope you enjoy watching it as I always think its much better to see a tool in action rather than just reading about it or seeing pictures. This guy is particularly good at explaining the features of the impact wrench and he is well known for demonstrating Makita tools.

Our Verdict on the Makita DTW1001Z 18 V LXT Brushless 3/4 Inch Impact Wrench

This is a great choice for removing wheel nuts and we have yet to come across one, where it has not been able to move it.

Not everyone has air tool options and this is about as close as you can get. Really, I think air tools are being surpassed by the quality of these battery models. It won't be long before thay are a thing of the past.

You can also buy a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter if you want to get a bit more out of this impact wrench and this actually works really well.

For me, this is the ultimate in a high powered impact wrench. If you do a lot of heavy work and want the best, then look no further.
