Best Paint Brush for Gloss - UK Advice & Tips

Thanks for taking your time to read our information on the best paint brush for gloss painting.

Our Gloss Painting Tips

The key to any good painting job is preparation. We have already written a useful article on how to prepare a room for painting, which is certainly worth a read. In this section though we are going to offer our tips just about painting with gloss.

A very quick video review

We have looked over all the video reviews and found this great short presentation on the best way to use gloss paint. It gives you an instant idea of what to expect as well as telling you all the tricks of the trade.

I hope you enjoy watching it as I always think its much better to see something in action rather than just reading about it or seeing pictures. This guy is particularly good at explaining the pitfalls and best techniques for a great finish

Painting with Gloss

The main reason we use gloss paint is to give our woodwork, such as doors, cupboards and skirting boards some type of shine, also referred to as a sheen. Gloss paint also offers a higher level of protection especially when it comes to cleaning the surface.

Most people will understand that a white door that has been painted with gloss paint is much easier to clean, than a wall that has been painted with an emulsion type of paint.

Different Types of Gloss Paint

It is worth knowing that there are several different types of gloss paint. These will all deliver slightly different finishes. The finish that you want will always come down to your own personal preference.

Just below we have explained what types of gloss are available and have also made suggestions as to where each type of gloss paint should be used. These are very popular for painting skirting boards and door frames.

Just be aware that different manufacturers may call these by slightly different names.

Velvet/Flat Paint

These will show a low sheen when looked at head on, and also have a slightly higher gloss finish when viewed from a slightly different angle. It is a soft sheen appearance.

These are best used in any area where there is high traffic or footfall

  • Family room
  • Living room
  • Dining room

Eggshell

These have a slightly higher gloss appearance than a flat gloss paint. They feel warmer and give a slightly deeper look to the surface. Eggshell gloss paint is better at resisting stains than the flat style we have explained above.

  • Family room
  • Living room
  • Dining room
  • Bedroom
  • Kid's room
  • Hallways
  • Ceilings

Low Sheen

These are pretty similar to eggshell, but have a slightly higher sheen, and are one of the most popular paint choices for someone that prefers a warmer feel to their gloss finishes.

They are a nice balance between getting some shine to the gloss and also being practical to being cleaned easily.

  • Dining room
  • Kid's room
  • Kitchen and Bathrooms
  • Hallways
  • Doors and windows
  • Shutters
  • Moulding

Semi-Gloss

These deliver around a 40-50% gloss shine but are not that reflective. They are very good at combating stains and extremely easy to clean. Again, these are a popular choice for many home owners.

  • Kitchen and Bathrooms
  • Doors and windows
  • Shutters
  • Moulding

Gloss

These have a reflective appearance and they deliver what is best termed a highly contemporary look. This is a tough gloss paint, which is excellent at reducing stains, is very easy to clean and is mainly used anywhere there may be fingerprints.

  • Kitchen and Bathrooms
  • Doors and windows
  • Shutters
  • Moulding

High Gloss

These have the highest reflective appearance and also offer the highest level of protection. These will mainly be used on doors and cabinets that are exposed to dirt and oil from the skin such as doors and kitchen cupboards.

  • Kitchen and Bathrooms
  • Doors and windows
  • Shutters
  • Moulding

We hope this has helped you with your choice of brush but if you are still not sure, don't forget out number one rated model is the Harris 101021005 Woodwork Gloss Essentials 5 Pack.
