This is the newer model Makita that now comes with a brushless motor. It's an upgrade from the model above and has the new motor as well as being able to plane 3mm at a time instead of 2mm.
It gets the same buyer ratings as the old model and though we appreciate the improvements, it will take some time to know if it's as good as the original. Also it's much more expensive, so these two reasons are keeping it at number 2 on our list. For the meantime, anyway.

Absolutely brilliant tool that is getting some of the best reviews and ratings that I have ever seen. There have been hundreds of buyers and this is really a 10 out of 10 tool for me.It will do the job of any corded planer and is really a pleasure to work with. Light, flexible and has plenty of power.
This will fit in especially well if you already have a range of Ryobi tools and I have to say it is extremely well priced for what you are getting.

The Dewalt is a very powerful 18V Li-ion Planer, delivering up to 12,000 rpm and is able to plane 2mm. Many corded versions can manage 4mm at a time but buyers dont see this as a problem and prefer to have the flexibilty of this cordless model to the extra depth provided by the corded counterpart.
This model will plane up to 78m at 1.2mm deep cut, per charge with a 5.0Ah Lithium+ battery. So that's quite a bit of planing with a single charge.

- Ultra-sharp, tungsten carbide reversible blades
- Adjustable depth of cut from 0-1.6mm in 0.1mm increments

This is another great planer that will work very well and you will find no complaints. I think it's a bit expensive compared to some of the other models and that's why it is down at number 5 on my list.

Cordless Planer Buying Tips
Many of these will come as "body only" so that means you will have to buy the battery as well. Can I suggest that you buy two batteries at this point? You will never regret it and although they are not cheap, it will make your life so much easier. If you are going to connect a vac to one of these machines we don't recommend that you use a home version. It's always best to have a good quality HD shop vacuum.
A very quick video review
We have looked over all the video reviews and found this great short presentation on these power tools. It gives you an instant idea of what to expect as well as telling you all the features and spec in and easy to understand format.
I hope you enjoy watching it as I always think its much better to see a tool in action rather than just reading about it or seeing pictures. This guy is particularly good at explaining the features and he is well known for demonstrating tools.

Hi in your opinion, how long will it be till there is a cordless planer on the market that would go to the same depths as a corded version.
I have a festool planer currently and whilst I really like it being able to go to 4mm, I hate the cables.
I've been holding off buying a new one up until now in the hope that a decent planer will come to the market.
Best I can see is the new Makita, but how would that be in comparison to the festool?
Thank you
