Key Features

Power

The Makita has a very powerful 620w, 230V ,motor, delivering up to 17,000 rpm, and is able to plane 2mm at each pass. This will deliver 34,000 cuts per minute and all that really means is, there are two blades that can do 17,000 rpm each.

This is a lot of power and if you have a large job to do then you will probably prefer this type of corded model as opposed to a cordless unit. It never drops the power and never runs down.

Planing

The KP0800 cordless planer delivers fast stock removal at a width of 82mm and will remove 2mm at a time. 82mm is a pretty standard size and you wouldn't really need anything wider than this. It's ideal for trimming doors and other surfaces leaving a very smooth finish.

It has a precision machined aluminium base for planing accuracy and this leaves your surface with an ultra smooth finish.

Dust extraction

The dust system collects nearly 100% of the dust and is connected to a vacuum, so there is no emptying of a bag or tidying up to be done

This is a major feature for me. Firstly that is has the facility, as I hate cleaning up after and secondly that the it connects directly to a vacuum and not to a bag. Most of the bags will collect around 90% of the dust and although that's great, I prefer 100% and no bag to keep having to empty. If you are going to connect a vac to one of these machines we don't recommend that you use a home version. It's always best to have a good quality HD shop vacuum.

Flexibilty

This planer is light to carry and use. Yes it is corded and you have to plug it in but thats not a big issue for me. If you are only working on a site or on outdoor projects then you might consider a cordless model but usually you can have power in most places.

Not quite as flexible as our cordless model friends.

A very quick video review

We have looked over all the video reviews and found this great short presentation on this Makita power tool. It gives you an instant idea of what to expect as well as telling you all the features and spec in and easy to understand format.

I hope you enjoy watching it as I always think its much better to see a tool in action rather than just reading about it or seeing pictures. This guy is particularly good at explaining the features of the cordless planer and he is well known for demonstrating tools.
