Cordless Screwdriver Buying Tips
These buying tips should help narrow down your choices, and we think they are worth a quick read.
Tip 1 - Small & Compact
When it comes to driving in screws there are basically 4 choices:
- Use a manual screwdriver and do it by hand
- Use a cordless screwdriver, which are great for screws up to around 2" in size and also for doing work like flat pack furniture etc
- Use a drill/driver for longer screws over 2" and tougher types of materials like hardwoods
- Use an impact driver for really heavy work like screwing into decking, fencing etc.
For those odd jobs around the home, a cordless screwdriver is a good choice, as long as it is light and compact. It saves getting out the larger cordless drill/driver and a cordless screwdriver will stop you from over driving screws into flat pack furniture or items such as door hinges.
Tip 2 - Easy to Use
Most cordless screwdrivers will have a few basic features. These should include forward/reverse, variable speed, a work light and a selection of driver bits. This does keep them simple to use, and as long as they have enough torque, then they will do a good job.
Their bigger brother the cordless drill/driver can be more difficult to use as they will have other features such as torque settings, slow starts, and hammer functions. Although these functions can be handy, it also makes the tool harder to use.
Tip 3 - Quick to Charge
Most cordless screwdrivers take around 3 hours to fully charge. That however will allow a good length of working time which is all you really need. The fact that most of these can also be charged using a USB cable, also means you can just plug them in to any socket with a USB charger.
That does make life easier for most people.
